The patient's healthcare provider assesses whether the patient requires skilled nursing care or rehabilitation services, which are typically provided in a swing bed. This is often the case for patients recovering from surgery, illness, or injury but who no longer need acute hospital care. The patient must meet specific criteria set by Medicare or Medicare Advantage to qualify for swing bed services. This usually involves needing skilled care such as physical therapy, IV therapy, wound care, or other services that require the supervision of skilled nursing staff.
