Accessing care in a medical-surgical (med-surg) department typically follows a structured process. This department generally provides care for patients recovering from surgery, managing chronic conditions, or undergoing medical treatments that require hospitalization. Patients who arrive at the emergency room with conditions that require surgery or intensive medical care may be admitted directly to the med-surg department after evaluation and stabilization. Stays in the med-surg department can also originate from planned surgical admissions and transfers from another department or hospital.
