DAISY Award

GCGH is excited to announce our latest DAISY Award Winner— Nightshift Nursing Supervisor Sarah Chapman, RN!

Sarah was nominated for this award by a fellow GCGH nurse who found herself in a very scary situation outside of the hospital. This nurse says Sarah kept her calm during the frightening ordeal and says without Sarah’s intervention she doesn’t know how this situation would have ended. This nurse says Sarah went above and beyond and is a fantastic example of how we are not just coworkers, but we are family at GCGH!

Way to go, Sarah! Thank you for being such a caring and compassionate nurse to all of those around you! We appreciate YOU!

Each quarter, a nurse will be selected by Greene County General Hospital’s nursing administration to receive The DAISY Award. At a presentation given in front of the nurse’s colleagues, physicians, patients, and visitors, the honoree will receive a certificate commending her or him for being an “Extraordinary Nurse.” The certificate reads: “In deep appreciation of all you do, who you are, and the incredibly meaningful difference you make in the lives of so many people.” The honoree will also be given a beautiful and meaningful sculpture called A Healer’s Touch, hand-carved by artists of the Shona Tribe in Africa.

One day while Pat was in the hospital, he asked his family to bring him a Cinnabon® cinnamon roll plus enough for all the nurses in his unit. With the help of Cinnabon’s parent company, FOCUS Brands, The DAISY Foundation carries on this tradition by serving Cinnabon to all the nurses in the Award recipient’s unit in thanks for everything they do for their patients and families.

Bonnie Barnes, President and Co-Founder of The DAISY Foundation recalls that “when Patrick was critically ill, our family experienced first-hand the remarkable skill and care nurses provide patients every day and night. Yet these unsung heroes are seldom recognized for the super-human work they do. The kind of work the nurses at Greene County General Hospital are called on to do every day epitomizes the purpose of The DAISY Award.”

“We are proud to be among the healthcare organizations participating in the DAISY Award program,” said Chief of Clinical Quality, Jill Raines. “Nurses are heroes every day. It’s important that our nurses know their work is highly valued, and The DAISY Foundation provides a way for us to do that.”

PETAL Award

Double congratulations go out to GCGH’s latest PETAL Award Winners!
Winners: Lauryn Vallad and Aeysha Stockrahm

Lauryn Vallad from our Environmental Services Department is our first winner! Fellow coworkers say Lauryn always goes above and beyond to ensure our Emergency Department is thoroughly cleaned. Recently, Lauryn spent extra time in a room to ensure all contaminations were taken care of to allow us to provide excellent care to our patients. Lauryn never complains and always has a positive attitude! A patient also nominated Lauryn, saying she is a very hard worker, and she always has a smile on her face. They say Lauryn will do whatever she can to help anyone, she goes above and beyond her daily tasks, and she’s simply the best!

Our second PETAL Award Winner is Aeysha Stockrahm, RRT! She is a Respiratory Therapist and was selected because her coworkers say she goes above and beyond for her patients! They say Aeysha loves to educate her patients and ensure they are getting the best care possible, adding that she works well with all staff and is always quick to respond. During a recent C-section, Aeysha was the Respiratory Therapist on duty and coworkers say she was prepared for any situation, getting supplies ready, staying calm, and making sure everyone had what they needed. TULIP Award

Congratulations to GCGH’s latest Tulip Winner— our Labor & Delivery Department! This is our team award that recognizes a specific department for their exceptional dedication and diligence at GCGH!

Labor & Delivery received multiple nominations for their hard work! One was from a recent patient who said his girlfriend was experiencing very painful contractions and our nurses and staff were all amazing at comforting both parents-to-be. The patient said following four very draining days, their baby girl arrived, but she had no color and no signs of breathing. He said our nurses & staff jumped into action. The patient said if it were not for our staff, their baby girl would not be here today. This patient said the way our staff took care of them went above and beyond their duties and he is forever indebted for the compassion our staff showed.

Another nomination came from one of our providers, Dr. McBride. He says he’s very appreciative of our Labor & Delivery Team’s hard work, flexibility, willingness to stay longer and come in early, and also pick up extra shifts. He says his job would be a lot harder otherwise. Dr. McBride says he has worked at a lot of medical facilities and the nurses/staff at GCGH are amazing!

Thank you so much, Labor & Delivery Team! We appreciate you daily and are so grateful that you’re a part of GCGH!

Outstanding Leader of the Year Award 2024

Congratulations, Jessi King!

Greene County General Hospital (GCGH) is excited to announce Director of Surgical Services Jessi King, MSN, RN as its 2024 Outstanding Leader of the Year!
Each year, hospital administration team members accept nominations for this award. King was chosen for always going above and beyond for her team. Employees say King doesn’t treat people as above her or below her, but with her. They say there is no job King will delegate that she won’t do herself. Staff describe King as selfless and say she is always looking for ways to improve processes for the operating room, for the hospital, and most importantly, for our patients and the community. They say King genuinely cares for people, and it shows every day.
King received her Associate of Science in Nursing from Vincennes University in 2012. She then received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Indiana University in 2013 and went on to earn a Master of Science in Nursing Administration from Ball State University in 2020. In addition to GCGH, King’s nursing career has taken her to Sullivan County Community Hospital, The Pain Clinic, and Terre Haute Surgical Center. She previously worked at GCGH’s Covid Vaccine Clinic before being named GCGH Director of Surgical Services in 2021. King says she had planned on becoming a Nurse Practitioner until the leadership opening at GCGH presented itself. King says she is so glad she took the opportunity. “I love working at Greene County General Hospital. There is something special about working in your hometown. Our surgery team is awesome! They make coming to work enjoyable and take such great care of our patients. I have learned so much from coworkers and some of the best mentors while I have been at GCGH.”, says King.
King lives in Linton and is married with two daughters. She says when she’s not at one of her daughters’ sporting events, she and her family enjoy going to IU Basketball games and spending time at the lake. King also likes to read and garden.

Safety Star of the Year Award 2024

As the end of 2024 draws near, we’re excited to present ourGCGH Safety Star of the Year Award to Shaun Ferree!
Shaun works in our Maintenance Department. On December 12th, Shaun was in the basement and noticed some of the lights were dimming and he heard a motor on the mezzanine making a strange noise. On the way to investigate the sound, Shaun saw a problem with one of the water pumps. Shaun immediately went into action and prevented a potentially devastating situation. We present this award to Shaun for his continued dedication to keeping our staff, patients, and visitors safe!
Thank you, Shaun, for ALL you do at GCGH! We value YOU!
